Friends of Londiani are an Irish registered charity working with people in a rural part of Kenya since 2002. Londiani is the name given to the area where we work. The people there are living on low incomes, access to clean water is a challenge, the majority don’t have electricity and those in the rural community rely on subsistence farming to make a living. We work in partnership with communities to help identify their needs and work with them to come up with solutions to the challenges they face. Our aim is to support them to lead healthier lives and apply their increased education and knowledge to creating sustainable livelihoods and stronger communities.
To access better education we support bursaries, teacher training & support, lifeskills, peer education and improved water & sanitation in schools.
To improve healthcare we focus on healthy village strategies, disease prevention, training & support for new mothers & babies.
To provide clean water we work on rainwater harvesting, gravity water schemes, solar disinfection and hand pumps.
To create a thriving economy we run business trainings, support access to capital, provide networking opportunities and support a sustainable tourism project.
In Ireland, our office organises & supports fundraising initiatives, looks after administration for the charity, takes care of communications and marketing and runs a volunteer programme. Our volunteers help in the office, organise fundraising events, represent us at volunteer fairs and events and we have an overseas volunteer programme where people go to Kenya as part of team each year and work with the communities there.
